UC Professor Xiao Xiao Receives Prestigious National Distinguished Teaching Award

Seaway Section of Mathematical Association of America Awards Xiao forDistinguished Teaching of Mathematics
Xiao Xiao, associate professor of mathematics at UticaCollege, was awarded the Clarence F. Stephens Award for Distinguished College or UniversityTeaching of Mathematics by the Seaway Section of the Mathematical Association of America(MAA).
Xiao has taught in the mathematics department at Utica College nearly a decade. Heearned his Ph.D. in mathematics from Binghamton University in May 2011. He also earned hismaster’s degree from Binghamton University and his bachelors from Zhejiang University. Xiao’sresearch is in arithmetic algebraic geometry, a discipline that uses algebraic geometry to solveproblems in number theory. In particular, he is interested in the classification of F-crystals overan algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. He is also interested in inquiry-basedlearning in undergraduate education. Xiao is a member of the Mathematical Association ofAmerica, the American Mathematical Society, the Greater Upstate New York Inquiry-BasedLearning Consortium, the Pi Mu Epsilon New York Alpha Upsilon, the Academy of Inquiry-Based Learning, and the Inquiry-Based Learning Special Interest Group of the MathematicalAssociation of America (IBL SIGMAA).
The Board of Governors of the MAA established the Section Awards for distinguishedCollege or University Teaching of Mathematics in 1991 to recognize teachers of mathematics atthe post-secondary level who have been widely recognized as extraordinarily successful. Thosewho receive this award have documented teaching effectiveness that has influence beyond theirown institutions.
Recipients for the section award are chosen each year by the Seaway Section TeachingAward Committee from nominations by fellow section members.
